7 Things Not to Do if You Want to Become a TEDx Speaker

Becoming a TEDx speaker is a dream for many, but the journey requires focus and preparation. Rather than listing what to do, I’d like to share seven things that can hinder your path to that red dot. Here’s what you should avoid to ensure a successful TEDx experience:

1. Doubt Yourself: The biggest obstacle to becoming a TEDx speaker is doubt. You must believe in yourself—no one else can instill that belief in you. During my TEDx preparation, I was reminded that I knew my message, lived it, and believed in it. When you speak from passion, doubt can create fear that’s paralyzing. Overcome this by trusting in your expertise, believing in yourself, and confidently sharing your story.

2. Overconsuming Other TEDx Talks: Watching too many TEDx talks can lead you to unintentionally mimic other speakers. While it’s okay to get an idea of stage presence and delivery, you want your presentation to be uniquely yours. Limit your viewing time and focus on delivering your message in a way that is authentic to you, letting your own uniqueness shine.

3. Disconnecting from Your Team: Stay connected with your coach, curator, and fellow speakers. Maintaining strong communication helps you stay on track, build relationships, and create a supportive environment. Engaging with like-minded individuals who share a passion for the theme can add valuable energy and insights to your preparation.

4. Focusing Too Much on Wardrobe: Your focus should be on the content of your speech, not on changing your look for the stage. Wear something that makes you feel like yourself—let your clothing reflect who you are, not who you think you should be. Authenticity in your appearance will help your words resonate with sincerity and passion.

5. Relying on AI Tools for Writing: While tools like ChatGPT can be helpful for grammar checks or creating outlines, avoid using them to write your entire speech. Authenticity is key in a TEDx talk, and crafting your speech yourself ensures that your passion and personal experience shine through. Use AI for support, but let your unique voice lead the way.

6. Skipping Rehearsals and Meetings: Attend every sound check, rehearsal, and meeting. Being fully engaged in these activities helps you build confidence and become familiar with the stage and process. Prioritize your TEDx commitments by planning your schedule ahead of time, ensuring you don’t miss out on any essential preparation.

7. Delaying Your Application: If you believe you have an idea worth spreading, don’t wait—apply now. Start researching TEDx opportunities and submit your application. The experience of sharing your story on a global platform is incredibly rewarding and can make a lasting impact on both you and your audience.

By avoiding these seven pitfalls, you’ll be better prepared to deliver a powerful and authentic TEDx talk. Embrace the journey, believe in yourself, and let your voice be heard.
